New Music House in algueña through the eyes of sixty artists

The Fundación Marjal, in collaboration with Algueña Town Council and representatives of Cor (Consulting of Creative Resources), brought together sixty local artists from Alicante with the aim of commissioning them to paint murals on the walls of one of the most emblematic buildings in the town of Algueña. With their palettes and brushes, the artists painted the former headquarters of the Spanish Guardia Civil, which has been renovated and turned into the town's new Casa de la Música (Music House).

Algueña is a little town locted inland in the province of Alicante. There the local headquarters of the Guardia Civil used to serve to control the flow of goods and people. This building had a strong military identity. Through this cultural initiative, the Fundación Marjal has succeeded in turning this building into a unique and inspirational place, where from now on local cultural performances will take place.

Once the renovation works had been completed, the building walls were like white canvases. Then the sixty artists have given a new identity to both the interior of the building and its windows. In the end, the new building had nothing to do with the old headquarters any more.

The artists gradually brought colour to the walls of Algueña's Music House and had the opportunity to depict on the building walls and windows what music means and conveys to them, and what feelings it invokes. In this way, the painters' brushtrokes have brought the old building to life.
